FLS delivers during lock-down

In this difficult period despite 46 percent of the UK’s truck fleet not operating, and 25 percent of drivers furloughed, Freight Logistics Solutions (FLS) have continued their transport work exporting and importing goods from around the globe on behalf of their clients who are still operating.  Whilst they remain ‘business as usual’ to all of their customers, FLS have experienced the volume between sectors changing dramatically, with a large reduction in usage in automotive and manufacturing generally, however as you might expect they’ve seen an increase in supporting the medical sector, primarily the NHS, but also for pharmaceutical businesses, and companies diversifying, producing and supplying PPE, equipment or supporting services to this unfortunately busy sector at this time.

Within Europe, border controls have been re-introduced across many countries and while restrictions on international travel have been imposed, the movement of freight is exempt from these restrictions, albeit border controls can result in delays in transit.

FLS continues to offer readily available dedicated vehicle options to all countries, but there has been a big reduction in the availability of ‘grouped loads’ due to the reduction in general volume, so many businesses are extending their haulage options by using companies like FLS.

Earlier this year the firm was asked by the NHS for support in developing resilience to its transport infrastructure and supply chain and additionally to expand its digital freight options. This resulted in FLS developing a bespoke online Client Portal with a transport booking facility and document storage servicing the UK’s seven NHS regional distribution centres. Since then, and as the NHS demands have grown,  FLS have rapidly and successfully rolled out the system and are already operational with deliveries from four out of seven distribution centres (Derby, Rugby, Bridgewater and Bury St Edmunds). FLS have delivered to nearly one thousand NHS sites around the UK, including hospitals, healthcare centres, universities and the new temporary hospitals such as the Nightingale in the London Excel.

In addition, FLS have delivered PPE and equipment directly to front line services including the University of Hospital Wales, the Royal Gwent Hospital, Llanfrechfa Grange Hospital and many more across Wales. With the other three UK, regional distribution centres coming online over the next few weeks FLS will continue to act as an important cornerstone to the NHS’s ongoing delivery requirements.

A spokesperson from NHS Supply Chain commented “… your drivers have supported nearly 1000 emergency lines of PPE being delivered to the NHS over the past few days. Thank you for your fantastic support. As we move through the phases of supporting the NHS there will be further challenges, yet unknown, I am now really confident they can be delivered with your continued support. Thanks again” NHS Operations Manager

Ieuan Rosser, Managing Director at FLS said “we are enormously proud to be playing a role in helping to tackle this pandemic and supporting the NHS. It’s been really impressive to see Wales entrepreneurial spirit rise up and we’ve had a fair few companies starting to manufacture products out of their norm to support the NHS.

We are an innovative company so extremely excited about the latest project we are working on behalf of the Welsh Government and Industry Wales in express delivering critical parts in the development of the new CTEX CPAP ventilator produced by Welsh Engineers CR Clarke – who usually design plastic fabrication equipment for the industry but have developed this new product with Dr. Rhys Thomas in just three days on a small industrial park in Ammanford. They are now producing 100 a day and we are now in support of the rollout of medical trials. I’m very happy with my team’s contribution and proud to be doing what we can for the NHS.”

For deliveries in and out of sensitive NHS sites, we have installed questionnaire procedures to check the health of drivers and asked them to wear gloves and masks where possible and adhere to the varying restrictions on each delivery site.

Councillor Joanne Gauden, Executive Member for Economy, Skills & Regeneration at Torfaen council said “I am delighted that Torfaen based Freight Logistics Solutions are using their skills, experience, knowledge and expertise in supporting the NHS locally, in Wales and across the UK. I would like to pay tribute to the team for all their hard work and dedication.”
